7 Tips for Better Website Design

7 Tips for Better Website Design

Would any company’s CEO or manager tolerate their sales executive to be dressed in dirty clothes when going out to meet clients? In the same way you should also be concerned about the look of your website. Because your company’s website is like an online sales executive who will either make a positive impression of the company on people or a negative one.

Remember many people may first visit your website before meeting any sales executive of your company. If their first impression is a bad one they will not even bother to have a meeting with your executive. Many top companies have realized this and that is why they pay thousands of dollars to get their websites designed by top firms who are experts at this.

Here are some tips which you should keep in mind while designing your company’s website:

1. Reduce the size of images

If you have large images on your website then it will load slowly. This can cause problems for people with slow internet connection. Just imagine visiting a website and having to wait a long time for it to load fully. This can be a very frustrating experience for the user. By reducing the size of large images we can help in reducing the loading time a little bit.

2. Easy Navigation

Visitors should not have to search for links when they want to navigate your website. All the important website categories should be clearly visible to all so that if anyone wishes to further explore a particular category then it should be easy for that person. If you can organize whatever content you have into relevant categories and provide links for navigating each category it will become easy for the visitors to understand where they are on your website. Otherwise they may get lost and wouldn’t know where to go next.

3. Headings and Subheadings

Most online users just scan through the content rather than reading in detail. For this reason it is important to have subheadings for your content. Make the subheadings bolded and preferably use another font color for them so that they stand out nicely from the rest of the text.

The main heading of the page should clearly stand out and should catch the attention of the people. You can increase the font size of the main heading. H1 or h2 tags can be used for this purpose. When you have an attention grabbing heading and frequent subheadings it becomes easier for people to scan through the page and read only those sections which interest them. This is likely to improve user experience.

4. Don’t use frames

Using frames will make the website look shabby. There is another disadvantage from SEO point of view when using frames. Search engine spiders cannot properly spider pages which have frames. This reason alone should be sufficient to avoid using frames as much as possible.

5. Don’t overdo graphics

Everyone likes pictures and graphics. But having too much of them will spoil the look of the page. People will immediately feel repulsion when they see a webpage filled with images from top to bottom. It will also make the page heavy and increase the loading time. So have a few images wherever necessary and choose only relevant and good looking graphics. Quality is more important than quantity here.

6. Don’t use a common template

Your website should have a unique look which differentiates it from the others. Do you want your house to look same like other houses? Similarly your website should not look same like others. It should be unique and different. For that reason, don’t use templates which are used by thousands of other webmasters.

Many of the free templates available online will probably be used by many people. So it is not a good idea to go for such templates especially if you are building an official website for your company.

7. Testing

You have to regularly test your website to see whether all links are working properly and whether images are loading fine or not. You should also test from time to time whether the server is running at good speed or is it slow. If your web server is down frequently it can mean a huge loss of business. There are tools to track the speed and uptime of the server. Do make use of such tools so that you can be immediately notified of any problems and can switch your web host if necessary.

I have learned the importance of testing prior to publishing a website. My first attempt at web design was a total disaster. If only I had tested it first I would have recognized all the things I need to tweak. Oh, well now I know better.

Thanks for the tips, these are indeed great quick fixes that are fairly easy to execute and remember. I see a lot of people talking about how to optimize their MLM sites and blogs for search, and that’s great, you definitely should be doing that, but don’t stop there. If you stop there, you’re not letting your site live up to it’s potential. Find relevant topics, socialize with your readers…these are just some of the things we should do as well. Blogging is a great tool for socializing and connecting with your target market.

I am astounded at how quite a few SEO’s around are unable to walk-the-walk! We are currently struggling to find another skilled SEO and are having a problematic time acquiring an individual that will be able to not just outline a strategy, but also implement the idea independently. A lot of people can give suggestions, but very few can really provide the changes to a site.
